The Process for Ordering a Map

The process for getting a map made is fairly straightforward. Here's what it looks like:

1. You come to me (via email or Twitter, whichever you prefer) with a reference so that I can get a general idea of what you are looking for. This reference needs to include all the key features and their locations. If you can't come up with a sketch, I will be willing to work with written instructions - these instructions need to be very clear and accurate.

2. Once I see the sketch or get the instructions, I will come up with an estimate of the length of time it will take and the quoted price for it (these prices will not differ greatly from those listed below)

3. I will come up with a proposed sketch that outlines the landmasses and the key features, including mountains, forests, rivers, etc, and send it back to you so that you can make any alterations that you would like (such as moving features, or even adding to taking some away). If you decide later down the line that you want any of these changes made, there will be an additional cost due to the amount of time it will take to change.

4. When you like the sketch and are happy for me to move on, I will begin the process and get working.

5. Once the map has been created, I will add all lettering you like (you can also pick a font if you have one in mind), and I will send it back to you for one final review. At this point, you can ask for small changes you would like to be made, and I will do them free of charge. Any additional round of edits will cost you between £5-£10 depending on what you want changed. For this reason, please include ALL your desired edits in a single document/email and make them as clear as possible.

6. When you are happy with the final product, I will email you the final results in both .jpeg and .png formats as well as a PayPal invoice.

What Information Will You Need to Provide?

What Will Impact the Price?

  • Purpose of the map (use in a book, TTRPG, private use, etc)

  • The size you need (I prefer my pieces to be 9x12 inches (210x297mm) as this allows for plenty of detail, but you can choose your size!)

  • When will you need this map for? Is there a particular deadline for it to be completed?

  • Map type (country, continent, or world map)

  • Colour options (black and white; off-white/aged; or fully coloured – if you have another preference not mentioned, talk to me!)

  • Rough/general shape of the map you want (this should be a sketch, no matter how rough, or very clear and detailed written instructions for me to follow)

  • Names of all important locations you want to be added in (counties, cities, oceans, mountains, rivers, forests, etc)

  • A general idea of terrains and landscapes (forests, deserts, grasslands, mountain ranges, etc)

  • Any specific or themed map key symbols you want to use (cities, religious sites, ruins, compasses, etc)

  • Any other specific information you would like on the map (e.g. sea monster illustrations, symbols, anything else you can think of)

  • Map size (in inches, cm, or mm)

  • Map type (country, continent, or world)

  • Map colour (black & white, aged/off-white, or full colour)

  • Level of detail you want/map style (particularly regarding forests)

  • Deadlines (how soon does it need to be done?)

  • More edits beyond the proposed final round after you see the finished result (depending on what you would like changed)

    • Basic colour and font changes will not incur additional charges, but texture additions will.

Use and Copyright

As the creator, I keep the copyright. However, you get the reproduction rights and exclusive rights. This means that you can use the map for prints, books, and any kind of merch you like (including commercial use) - provided you are not passing the work off as your own.

You will be the only one with these rights to your map.

You don't need to attribute me to the image, though it would be appreciated. I retain the right to use your map image as example pieces for potential clients, and to be used in my portfolio. However, you do not need to worry about me posting your map before you do unless you give me express permission. I understand that you might want it to be a surprise for whatever reason!

In Short

Once I have sent you the final product, you can use it for anything you like, including for commercial purposes (e.g. using it in a book, various prints, merch, bookmarks, etc), but I keep the copyright as the original creator.

Possible Map Sizes

There are a variety of map sizes you could opt for. While I prefer to create pieces that are 9 x 12 inches (210 x 297mm) to get in detail, you can select your preferred size.

Here are some size examples to get you thinking:

A3 (12 x 17 inches / 297 x 420 mm)

A4 (9 x 12 inches / 210 x 297 mm)

A5 (6 x 9 inches / 150 x 210 mm)

If you have a custom size in mind, shoot me a message! The size you want will have an impact on the overall price.

A4 (9 x 12 inches) sizing will be my standard, and any larger or smaller sizes will cost a bit more due to the additional time it takes to make them.
